If any of you follow my wife and I on social media, it is no surprise that we have recently purchased a travel trailer. We have been consumed with camping! This has been something we have wanted to do for years. We bought a used “Class C” camper that was destroyed in the Hail Storm that hit Richmond, KY last year (2023). We were able to get one camping trip out of it before it was totaled in that storm. It was a devastating experience for the family. We were so excited and had so much fun, then in an instant, that joy was snatched! Thanks to my mom and dad, we were able to make this dream a reality after such a horrible experience with the Class C. We recently purchased a 30’ Coachmen Catalina Travel Trailer (See Below).
Our goal behind purchasing the camper is to spend more time doing “things” with our family versus buying “things.” I know that can sound a bit hypocritical, because we bought a camper when really all we needed was a tent to go out and enjoy the great outdoors. But, I would say that you do not live with three women who are all princesses. Daddy had to get them some Air Conditioner! So here we are. Lindsey and I have been on a mission for most of our girls lives to get them outdoors and away from screens as much as possible. Traveling can be a daunting task for families, but I feel the reward outweighs the work it takes to get us from point A to point B. Lindsey and I always talk about how important it is for us to make experiences and memories, and one of the best ways we can do that is to be outdoors together. Steven Rinella in his book, “Outdoor Kids in an Inside World” puts it this way, “The whining and fighting during the two-hour car ride to the lake may make you want to bag the whole trip. No matter what, though, stick with it. I have faith that you’ll eventually find, or reconnect with, the addictive qualities of nature.” There is something special about uninterrupted time outdoors with your family. There is something unique about a cup of coffee in the morning watching your kids play. It really is therapeutic. One thing I want is to avoid being a family stuck inside four walls behind the obstacle of technology.
I want to start sharing on my Substack our experiences at different campgrounds that we visit. This is a way for me to remember and document our trips. Heck, maybe you end up buying a camper and visit some places that we frequent. We would love to have you sit around our fire, paint some rocks, roast some hotdogs, make mud pies, and ride scooters with us.
Kentucky Horse Park had some really nice sites. Every site that we seen was flat and made it very easy to level out the RV. I will say I felt like the sites were closer to one another than they are at Fort Boonesborough. Regardless, we made the best of being outside. The photo above was Andersyn’s first attempt at roasting her own hotdogs for dinner! We were nervous about going this past weekend due to weather, but everything ended up working out.
One really cool activity KHP has for the kiddos is their Rock Snake. Families can pick out rocks, decorate them with your own personal style, and add them to their Clip Clop Cobra!
Another benefit of KHP are the clean bath houses, multiple playgrounds, access to the legacy trail for riding/biking, fishing opportunities, and a really nice campground store with slush puppies! Our kids are big fans of slush puppies.
Hope you all can get outside and start making some memories! Talk again, soon!
